Hardware Chaos

Writer's picture: Ryan BonnerRyan Bonner

This week was one of hardware chaos for me. A brand new machine which should have been working fine came back with issues. The machine had two SSDs and two HDDs installed. The client had unplugged one of the HDDs to connect the SSD from his old computer for a data transfer and now the PC wouldn't boot at all, even with the original drive plugged back in. What followed was a week of troubleshooting, a replacement power supply (low voltage on the 3.3v rail), a replacement SSD (the primary SSD failed outright), and a clean install of Windows amongst numerous other diagnostics.

This was matched by another job where two user profiles vanished without a trace. Tuesday night the logs show it writing to the profile. Wednesday morning a brand new profile is created with no trace of the old. Hardware diagnostics revealed no issues and a disk check found only minor problems. PC restored to the office on Friday morning only to completely fail on Monday.

Electronics can be fickle things. One day they work, the next they don't. I could potentially have charged for diagnosing the new PC. But I'd rather have a client who is happy to have a brand new working machine. I'd also like to thank my suppliers - Dove Electronics - who got a replacement PC for the second job out to me in just over 24 hours. After a Monday morning failure, the client had a new PC on Tuesday afternoon.
