Signing up to online sites can be hazardous for your inbox. You put in your email address expecting in good faith that you won’t be bombarded with piles of spam, and yet the following day your mailbox is full of emails – from the site you signed up with, from their affiliates, from complete unknowns. Some of them may be legitimate, some of them may be phishing attempts. You click on more unsubscribe buttons than you care to remember but the email flood doesn’t stop.
Sound familiar? There is a solution.
Email masking is the method of creating an email alias for a specific purpose – in this case, masking your real address with an alias. Emails sent to the alias still come into your mailbox, but your actual email address is kept hidden (unless you reply – that’s another conversation). Starting to get spam on the alias address? Just drop the alias and the spam stops!
For most small businesses, creating an alias is fairly simple. Both Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace allow multiple email aliases – up to 30 for Google and up to 400 for Microsoft. However, having to log into your admin console to create an alias every time you want to sign up to a new website becomes repetitive and time consuming. In addition, you still reveal your company domain name, potentially allowing spammers and scammers to track you down via your website and continue the flood.
That’s where NordPass comes in.
NordPass is primarily a cloud-based Password Manager. Using extensions available for all popular browsers, NordPass tracks, encrypts, and saves your logins so you don’t have to remember every single password. NordPass also has a feature called Email Masking. Email Masking through NordPass creates a randomly generated email alias on the NordPass email servers that is then forwarded to your primary address. Your primary address stays hidden and if you start getting spam on that address, simply disable the mask. Because the alias is on NordPass servers, your company domain remains hidden, limiting the amount of personal information a scammer can obtain.
